Eleven Empire x Jazz & The City

Eleven Empire curator Sebastian König has been invited to help shape part of this year’s Jazz & The City programme. The collaboration between the festival and Eleven Empire was just announced by festival director Markus Deisenberger in the context of a mica interview:

“For the first time, there will also be a collaboration with Eleven Empire. I’ve repeatedly been impressed by the exceptional concerts Sebastian König puts on at the Rockhouse. When I asked him whether he could imagine an overlap between his series and the festival, he said he definitely had ideas that don’t quite fit the Rockhouse format.”

As part of this collaboration, Eleven Empire presents two concerts with free admission on Friday, 17 October.

With SCHMACK the programme features one of the standout formations in contemporary Austrian jazz. For years, the ensemble has been one of the most distinctive voices on the local scene, combining musical virtuosity with a signature artistic identity.

In addition, Jan Jelinek has been secured for an exclusive performance in the special atmosphere of Kollegienkirche.

Jelinek is one of the defining figures of electronic avant-garde. He gained international attention in 2001 with his album “Loop-Finding-Jazz-Records,” on which he transformed samples of jazz recordings into abstract sound particles, loops and textural compositions. Today, the work is regarded as a classic at the intersection of jazz reference, electronic music and sound art.

As a border-crosser between club culture, jazz tradition and radio art, Jelinek has, over decades, set key impulses for the development of experimental electronic music. His work has been honoured with the Karl Sczuka Prize, among others, and he also received the renowned Villa Aurora fellowship. His output is considered groundbreaking for the connection of electronic music, jazz aesthetics and contemporary sound art.
